René Lewis-Carter

“I am an educator because the Creator has given me natural abilities, compassion for others, and a wealth of knowledge to impart to the children of our community. I am an educator and I educate simply because I am fulfilling my purpose.”

Welcome to Algiers Charter

Since December 2005, Algiers Charter has provided quality education and resources for the students and families we serve. We were one of New Orleans’ first charter management organizations daring to do differently by offering options in school choice to families throughout the city.

More than 11 years later, as the majority of the public schools have chartered, Algiers Charter continues to ensure that every child is afforded a superior education. We want every student we educate to be equipped with the necessary academic and life skills for their future success. We remain committed to the goal of producing outstanding results for our students and believes it is essential that every employee at Algiers Charter is supported in this effort.

As your CEO, I will utilize every tool in my arsenal to ensure the success of every Algiers Charter school. Together with our scholars, families, teachers, staff, Board of Trustees, and our community, we will execute our shared vision for academic growth, student achievements, and the long-term success of Algiers Charter.

René Lewis-Carter became Chief Executive Officer of Algiers Charter in May 2016. Prior to that, Mrs. Lewis-Carter spent more than a decade at Martin Behrman Charter School. She served in a number of roles: teacher, instructional coordinator, assistant principal, and eventually principal. While at Martin Behrman, she led her team to become one of the first Louisiana A+ Schools for Arts Integration in the New Orleans Area. Her work and the gains made by the students and staff of Behrman Charter have been chronicled in local publications (Times-Picayune, Gambit, and The Louisiana Weekly), national publications (Edutopia Magazine), and various other educational and media outlets (National Institute for Excellence in Teaching and The Summit for Courageous Conversations).

Lewis-Carter believes that all children can learn, and that all children deserve the life-changing privilege of doing so from a team of highly-motivated teachers who care about them as scholars and citizens. This belief energizes her to create environments that nurtures, supports, and challenges all who enter an Algiers Charter School. As a visionary leader, she sees greatness in others, and empowers them to see greatness in themselves. Lewis-Carter often says that the only thing that separates her students from others is experiences and exposures. Her aspiration and life’s work is to provide her children with those great experiences that can only be found in a quality education, provided by a highly-qualified, knowledgeable, caring eductor.

Mrs. Lewis-Carter has received various honors and awards throughout her career. She has received the distinct honor of 2016 Middle School Louisiana Principal of the Year from the Louisiana Department of Education. A New Orleans native, Lewis-Carter holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Arts in Education Administration and Leadership.
