Message from our Director

On behalf of the Algiers Charter Schools Association, I would like to welcome you to start a new year of academic discovery as we begin the 2011-2012 school year. Last year, we worked to achieve double-digit growth on School Performance Scores as several of our schools were among the highest academic achievers in Orleans Parish. These schools are Martin Behrman, Alice Harte, and O. Perry Walker.

We look to build on that success by increasing our academic progress and continued efforts to bridge the academic achievement gap.

We also worked with those schools within the Association that performed below basic expectations. We instituted a turnaround model at McDonogh #32 which includes benchmark monitoring and researched math curriculum. We added Tabula Digita (a 3-D web instructional game) to support instruction, seriously evaluated the instructors by using their Teacher Effectiveness Scores and added additional support to McDonogh #32 by appointing Mavea Marsalis as the assistant principal.

In addition to the technological advances in classrooms, we are committed to providing all of our teachers with additional training and professional development to keep them informed of the broader educational landscape.

This year we welcome new leadership to three of our schools with Monique Hicks-Cook as principal of Algiers Technology Academy, Deanna Rogers as principal of Dwight D. Eisenhower Academy of Global Studies and Wylene Sorapuru as principal of W. J. Fischer Accelerated Academy. Dr. Henderson Lewis is our new Director of Instructional Technology and Dahme Bolden is the Director of Response To Intervention.

We believe these changes will benefit our students immensely while giving our academic team needed support to succeed across the association.

We are more than hopeful the new year will be one of increased scholastic development, social improvement for our students and professional enrichment for our teachers and administrators. As school progresses, we will continue to search for new ways to nurture, encourage, and inspire our young people to achieve greatness.

We are excited to continue to serve the thousands of students in the association and remain committed to providing a quality education for the students of Orleans Parish. As always we welcome your participation as a valued stakeholder in our schools.

Respectfully,
Andrea Thomas-Reynolds, Ed. D.
Chief Executive Officer
